What is that thing Jimmy is holding? I assumed it's some sort of exercise apparatus, but it looked like an over-sized peanut. Whatever it is, Jimmy good-naturedly posed for a photo with it. Jimmy works at the California Cool Thrift Store in Grover Beach, and probably sees a lot of unusual merchandise.

This is Richard, putting in a day's work at the gas station at 13th and Grand in Grover Beach. Business looked slow. He politely asked to wash the windows of my car and it seemed like a request from another decade...And a reminder of how pleasant it is to live in a small-ish city where, every day, quaint moments like this can still take place. Richard seemed quite surprised that I asked to take his photo. It's just my way of saying "thank you" to him for doing his part to keep the small town atmosphere alive.

Here are Kyle and Kendall, young business people who set up a lemonade stand on the corner in yesterday's hot weather. They stuck to it even though business was slow. "We've been out here for three hours," Kyle said. They did make some profit: The ice cream truck lady traded them ice cream for lemonade. They know how to make a deal. I bought some lemonade and they threw in the picture for free. "Come again," Kendall said. I'm sure I will. The lemonade was great.

Three men named Jose in Arroyo Grande

These three men named Jose worked in lettuce fields in Arroyo Grande today. They're on their lunch break when I stop to take their photo. The hillarity broke out despite our language barrier when I started writing their names down. I thought they were joking with me. All three named Jose? Then two more in the group also claimed the first name, "Jose," but said they use their middle name instead. One Jose told me that's nothing. In the city where he's from, every man is called "Jose" or "Jesus." Must make things very confusing. Or maybe less. We were all too busy sharing a laugh to discuss it any further.

This is Curtis with his unusual-looking aparatus used to make sure gas stations are dealing with us safely, and fairly. He gave quite an instructional lecture about the use of the equipment and all of the tests he performs. We'll have to trust it to him, because for the life of me, I can't remember a single word of the highly technical jargon he spoke. It was like a different language.

Kaden was dining in the booth next to mine, accompanied by his sister, Camie. I couldn't help but overhear as they had a running conversation, punctuated by Kaden's fascination with making motorboat sounds, and Camie trying to keep him quietly entertained. As patient as she was, I assumed that she was his mom, but when I asked to take their photo she told me he is her little brother. What a lucky little guy to have such an attractive and kind sister.

It took two tries to get him to smile.

Jim on the Doghouse

This is my good friend Jim. He's the kind of guy who puts underwear on his head at the laundromat simply to break up the monotony for the other patrons (yesterday). Or, who rolls up his shirt and strolls along with his midriff bare, just to be funny (also yesterday). This morning, I captured him sitting on the doghouse, chatting with someone, and I think he only meant to rest while he was having a conversation, and wasn't aware of how funny it looked until he caught me taking his picture. Then, he just groaned, "Oh no...Just be sure to point out that I was on the doghouse...Not in it." Done. Though I'm not sure what difference it makes.

Here are Claire and Esther, two sweet sisters whom I spotted with their family in the drugstore in A.G. There's a certain system a family always has. Every member is trying to get their own needs met, while helping the others get their needs met as well. Everyone has their specific role. Claire (left) was at the register with mom. Esther (right) was trying to find something in the store. Mom sent Claire after Esther. Neither sister returned right away, so Mom left the line to find them both. When all three came back, I asked Mom if a photo would be okay. Dad suggested stepping outside for the shot, then came along to supervise. Whew! Families are hard work...But it's all worth it, isn't it? Sisters are priceless.

Here's Riley. I just managed to catch him pausing for a moment in his exploration of the restaurant. He was greeting people, and traveling from table to table, trying to take in the whole experience. From the look in his eye, he's serious about his job of learning about the world. What else are you supposed to do when you're two? Today, he greets friendly restaurant patrons...Tomorrow, heads of state.

Here are two friends, Ryanne and Hannah stopping for some fast food in the middle of their day. When I asked them what they had in common, what made them friends, they told me that they were both "Weird because they think everything is funny." I did notice them getting phone calls on a pink cell phone, and having quite a bit to laugh and talk about together as they waited for their food. Let's hope they continue to share lots of laughter and fun in the years to come.

Here's Bill sitting in Nan's Pre-Owned Books store. He was waiting around while his wife shopped, and after a bit of haggling, agreed to let me take this shot. He opened the negotiations at ten bucks for the honor, but since I only had a quarter on me, he took pity on me and settled for a free photo. I took two. With annoying flash. I drive a hard bargain. He said he's not from around here (visiting from Oklahoma), doesn't own a computer, and doesn't intend to get one, so he'll probably never see the picture anyway. Bill looks like he's probably made a lot of decisions-- and sticks to them. So that's that!

Richard and Lexie in the Park

Richard and Lexie have been together for many years. Lexie has been quite ill, and her husband had been caring for her. He was ill himself but didn't know it and had to be rushed into heart surgery. Now Richard is on the mend, and they appear at Ramona Garden Park on sunny days to perform. Lexie is an accomplished pianist, and Richard sings like Hank Williams.

Here's how they sound together as they sing "Sioux City Sue"

Some days, Lexie isn't feeling up to performing, so Richard sings solo with a karaoke machine he rigged to a cart. He calls his act, "Songs I Sing to My Wife." During his breaks, he writes his memoirs on the notepads he carries with him. They've traveled all over the United States, and have great stories to share. Donovan's Missing Tooth

Ysidro allowed me to take his photo even though there was quite a language barrier. I don't speak much Spanish at all. His companions giggled, but he proudly posed. He seemed so striking against the water in his cowboy hat, multiple gold chains, and boots. When I asked to take one more photo, just in case, because the lighting was unusual, he politely declined. There's only so much to go around.
